What’s the best paint to paint my interior with?

Our preferred paints are pro-grade and premium-grade paints manufactured by Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. Pro-grade paints are paints that cost about $50-65 per gallon retail price. Premium grade paints cost about $70-80 per gallon retail price. These paints have a proven history with us for interior painting in Springfield Illinois and surrounding areas. Pro-grade and premium-grade paints are know for their excellent coverage, washability, and long lasting color retention. We avoid using any low-grade paints ($30-40 or less retail price) or box-store paints as these often have poor surface coverage and are difficult to achieve a professional quality finish with.

What’s the difference between low cost paints and higher cost paints?

Interior paint is generally made up of 4 main ingredients: Pigments (for color) Binders (for adhesion) Solvents (liquids) and additives.

Pigments are important for achieving full color coverage on a surface and long lasting color retention. Binders are what give the coating integrity to resist cracking, blistering and peeling. Lower cost interior paints (below $30 per gallon retail price) will contain lower quality Pigments and Binders then higher cost paints ($30 or higher per gallon retail price). This means lower quality interior paints will require more coats to fully cover and will show color fade and general wear and tear faster than higher quality interior paints.

Our standard pro-grade interior paints we use retails for around $50 per gallon. Our upgrade option premium-grade interior paints retails for around $75 per gallon. As you can see, we only use top quality products on all of our interior painting in Springfield Illinois and surrounding areas.

What is paint sheen and what sheen should I paint my interior with?

Sheen is a measure of the reflected light (glossiness) from a paint finish. Glossy paints are shiny and reflect most light. Flat paints diffuse most of the light in a range of angles. Higher gloss paints are more scuff resistant and washable but will highlight all imperfections on a painted surface and do not touch-up well. Flat paints hide imperfections well and touch-up nicely but are more prone to scuffing. Modern flat paints have become quite washable, nearly like a gloss paint. The gloss level of paint can also affect its apparent color.

There are many levels of paint sheen with their own terminology attached. Depending on the paint manufacturer, paints will come in sheens like:

flat, matte, low-lustre, satin, eggshell, pearl, semi-gloss and high gloss

What questions should I ask an interior painter before I hire one?

Can I have a copy of your General Liability COI (Certificate of Insurance)?
This is the #1 thing you should ask a painting contractor for 2 reasons. The main reason is a contractor’s General Liability Insurance is what covers homeowners and property owners in the event of property damage or bodily injuries that occur as the result of negligence by contractors or their workers.

Another reason to ask a painting contractor for a copy of their GL insurance certificate is because General Liability Insurance is the most basic element of any home service business. Carrying it shows that the contractor or company is not only looking out for their own best interests, but also for the client and the client’s property. For a true professional painting contractor Liability Insurance is as equally important as the brushes and rollers, and therefore is never overlooked.

If your painting contractor can not immediately provide you with a copy of their General Liability Certificate of Insurance, or says they do not carry General liability insurance, RUN! If a painter can’t take their business serious enough to carry the proper insurance then that’s a BIG red flag.

Are your workers employees or 3rd party sub-contractors?

For 90% or more of the Painting Contractors in Central Illinois the true answer to that is neither. The most common form of hired “workers” in our industry are called “Paid under the table” workers. This practice is as shady as the term implies. Paid under the table means a contractor pays a worker in cash but neither party reports the transaction to the IRS.

Why would so many do this? Because it means they don’t have to pay employee taxes, Workmen’s Compensation, Unemployment Insurance, Social Security or Medicaid. You, know, all the stuff us hard working people have to pay into out of every single paycheck. Why should Chuck in a truck and his friend Buck be any different then the rest of us?

More importantly, workers who are “paid under the table” are not legally insured to work on anyone’s property and therefore expose property owners to a huge liability risk.

We are proud to say all our staff are employees of ProFinish Painting and we do not hire 3rd party sub-contractors. Nor do we pay anyone “Under the table”.

How to prepare for a professional interior painting project

Submit paint colors
Be sure to select your paint colors and submit them to your painting contractor before the project starts. It’s also important to discuss paint sheen preference (if any). It’s very simple to submit your colors with ProFinish Painting. Just visit our Contact page and fill out the brief My C olors form.

Property access
Your painting contractor will need to be able to access the work areas during normal work hours for the duration of the interior painting project.
At ProFinish Painting our normal work hours for our interior painters are Monday-Friday 8am-6pm. Your project manager will coordinate with you the project date(s) and property access for the interior painting crew.

Property prep
One of the great things about hiring ProFinish Painting for your Interior painting is there’s almost nothing you need to do to prepare for your home or business to be painted! The work area(s) just needs to be free of any pets, items or clutter aside from any furniture or larger items that you want the painting contractor to help move. We will move items, furniture and wall-hangings as needed but are not liable for any damages. Fragile items, furniture and wall-hangings should be removed from the work area prior to the project start date.

What to expect from a ProFinish Interior Painting Project

Our Interior Painting Process
The 1st thing our Interior Painters do when they arrive on a jobsite is coordinate project details with you. The painters will confirm where each paint color needs to be applied and where your exterior water spigot is located for paint brush clean-up. They will also discuss what holes to fill or leave unfilled on the walls, in case you want to hang anything back in the same spot after the interior painting project is complete.

The painters will then follow our SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) for interior painting prep which include: cover all floors and furniture as needed, remove curtains/blinds and other hardware from walls, caulk trim as needed, scrape away lose or peeling paint, fill all holes, dings and gouges as needed, sand surfaces smooth, mask surface as needed with painters’ tape and paper/plastic, and apply primer to surfaces as needed.

After prep is complete, the interior painting begins! Your walls get coated in high quality paint that looks and feels luxurious. Our interior painters are trained to apply the proper mil thickness of paint needed for a long lasting and beautiful paint finish. It’s safe to say, ‘we got you covered’ for professional interior painting in Springfield Illinois and surrounding areas.

Payment Process
We collect a deposit to reserve your interior painting project on our schedule. The deposit amount is based on the size of the project and the amount of materials needed. Typically, most projects will require a 20-50% deposit. Progress payments are due according to the payment schedule shown on the quote. Final payment is due upon substantial completion of the project. We will email you an invoice when a payment is due. The invoice will have a link to our simple and secure online payment portal. We also accept cash, check and credit card.

Touch-ups
The PDCA defines a “Touch-Up” as this: The correction of deficiencies in the specified work to achieve a “Properly painted surface”.
“Damage caused by others” or “Latent damage” is sometimes incorrectly referred to as touch-up. The correction of “Damage caused by others” and “Latent damage” are distinct from touch-up.

If your interior painting project needs any touch-ups because we missed something, no worries. We will take care of it. Just inform one of your interior painters or your Project Manager and we will address it right away. Sorry, no payment may be withheld for touch-up completion. The project is considered to be substantially complete after majority of the agreed work has been completed. Final payment is due upon substantial completion of the interior painting project.

Leftover Paint
Any tinted paint remaining after we complete an interior painting job is yours to keep. We will even label the cans for you so there’s no confusion about what paint and color was used in your home or business. These cans are useful for future touch-ups and as a color/product reference.

The PDCA Standards for a Properly Painted Surface

A properly painted surface is defines as uniform in appearance, color, texture, hiding and sheen. It is also free of foreign material, lumps, skins, runs, sags, holidays, misses, or insufficient coverage. It is also a surface free of drips, spatters, spills or overspray caused by the painting and decorating contractor’s workforce. In order to determine whether a surface has been ‘properly painted’ it shall be examined without magnification at a distance of thirty-nine (39) inches or one (1) meter, or more, under finished lighting conditions and from a normal viewing position.
